Mary Jane Kerrigan (née Reed, formerly Young)
Mary Jane Kerrigan was born February 24, 1939, in New York City and died peacefully on April 3, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Leo C. and Kathryn Reed. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cary Alan Young; two brothers, Thomas Reed (Connie) and Paul Reed; and son John Young (Wendy). She is survived by her beloved husband, John E. Kerrigan, Jr.; daughter, Ruth Anne Young (Michael); son, Jim Young (Nanette); stepson, Shawn Kerrigan (Nicole); grandsons, Cody Young (Hailey), Sean Youngstone, Josh Young (Chasity), and Ben Youngstone; and great-grandsons, Cade Young, Colton Young, and Lawson Young; nieces Sharon Reed and Patti Reed; and nephews Chris Reed and Dustin Reed.
A lifelong, devoted Catholic, she lived her life with family and faith as her central priorities. As a single mother following the death of her first husband in 1974, she was a constant presence at every school event or family milestone to support her loved ones. She possessed an adventurous spirit – in 1979, she took her three children on a two-month, cross-country camping trip. Her love of travel continued into retirement, when she and John sold their home, purchased an RV, and spent several years crisscrossing the country before settling in Waynesboro, PA.
Nursing was Mary Jane’s lifelong passion; she became a registered nurse at the age of 21 and served in diverse roles throughout her life, including hospital-based nursing, school nursing, nursing homes, teaching, and hospice. While being a nurse was her lifelong passion, hospice work became her true joy.
