Linda M. Hankins, 85, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly on May 23, 2026, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born on September 25, 1940, in Waterbury, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Harold E. Marshall and Mildred M. (Ziegelmaier) Marshall.

After completing her education at Wilby High School in Waterbury, CT, in 1959, she began her career in the billing department at Waterbury Hospital.

In 1962, she met her late husband, Kenneth, at Grand Central Station in New York City. They were married on June 15, 1963. After Kenneth’s Army discharge later that year, they moved to Chambersburg when he accepted a position with Black and Davidson, Associates.

Linda worked as a secretary for Lum Insurance and, during the holiday season, as a sales clerk at the former Sherk’s. Most will remember her from her long-standing role as a sales clerk at the former Bon-Ton, where she began working in November 1978 while it was still known as Eyerly’s. She held this position until her retirement on December 31, 2012.

An avid reader of mystery and detective novels, her favorite authors included Rita Mae Brown, Lillian Braun, Del Shannon, and Janet Evanovich. She also enjoyed watching TV shows such as NCIS, Bones, and anything on Animal Planet or The History Channel.

Linda is survived by her three children: Harold and Susan of Chambersburg, and Wendy of Shippensburg; one grandchild, Zachary D. Gochenauer of Shippensburg; her cousin, Richard Mortensen of Prospect, CT; and several nephews and one niece.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, a grandson, Sebastian M. Gochenauer, and her cousin, Annabelle Lyle.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Central Presbyterian Church, 40 L.W.W., Chambersburg.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be directed to Central Presbyterian Church or Better Days Animal League, P.O. Box 57, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
