Kimberly Chastain (Spottswood) Saunders, 53, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 27, 2026, in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born April 3rd, 1973 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Ann (Stoner) Spottswood of Waynesboro and the late Albert Ethan Spottswood.
Kim was a proud 1991 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School where she was a standout on the volleyball and basketball court. She helped guide the Maidens to multiple state tournament appearances during her 4 years. She was named to multiple Mizuno Pennsylvania All-State Volleyball teams as well. Her prowess in volleyball led her to accept an athletic scholarship at Morgan State University, from where she later transferred to finish her career at Drexel University where she graduated from in 1995. During her college career Kim set an NCAA record for serving aces in a single season.
Kim was a passionate leader, working for the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC where she would conduct workshops for other businesses to foster the emergence of their leaders. However, she is most known for channeling that leadership in her absolute love of coaching volleyball. Kim spent time coaching volleyball at the collegiate level at North Carolina Central University, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, and High Point University. After a brief coaching hiatus, Kim returned to take over the helm of her beloved Maidens program in 2012, with the sole goal of restoring the “Magic” in her alma mater. Across her 14 years running her program, she amassed over 200 wins, completed an undefeated regular season, won multiple coach of the years, and never had a losing record in a season. She also brought out her love of coaching into the club & AAU volleyball sphere, partnering with the Athletes Edge of Greencastle, PA to operate a Franklin County based club which she founded and served as director, often coaching an age group as well. While coaching at Waynesboro, Kim was Chief Operating Officer at Pictures Plus O’Roke Photography of Zullinger, PA where she coordinated with many schools of the tri-state area to schedule both athletic and academic pictures.
Kim enjoyed the beach and listening to her favorite musician Jon Bon Jovi. Above all else, family is what mattered most to Kim. Although not large, Kim’s family was known across Waynesboro as tight knit. A favorite event of Kim and her family was traveling to University of Delaware football games for her beloved son Ethan. A leader in every facet of the word, Kim was known for going out of her way to assist anyone with anything. Kim’s selflessness will never be replaced and will always be reflected in the lives she touched in her coaching, professional, and personal endeavors.
Kim was preceded in death by her father Albert Ethan Spottswood who passed away July 20, 2020.
Kim is survived by her mother Ann Spottswood, her sister Michelle Spottswood, her husband Mark Saunders and her son Ethan Saunders.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Trinity United Church of Christ, 30 W. North Street, Waynesboro, PA with Rev. Dani Neff officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Friday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA and one hour prior to the services, Saturday morning, in the church.
