Mrs. Jeanne Elizabeth (Deardorff) Monn, 93, of Shippensburg, PA passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Jeanne was born on May 3, 1932, in Chambersburg, PA. She was the daughter of Paul and Mable (Martin) Deardorff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Benjamin Roy Monn Jr., a son, Benjamin Roy Monn, III, and two brothers – Glenn and Robert Deardorff.
She is survived by two sons: Jerry Monn and his wife Linda, Tim Monn and his wife Nancy, a daughter, Elizabeth (Monn) Thorpe and her husband Phillip, nine grandchildren: Jason, Jenn, Erin, Karinne, Jill, Kaylee, Ali, Greg, and Micaela, 14 great-grandchildren, and three siblings – Lucille Myers, Janet Campbell, and Donald Deardorff.
Jeanne graduated from Chambersburg Area High School in 1950. After high school, she attended Shippensburg State Teachers College from 1950-1953, where she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. In 1972, she received her master’s degree from Shippensburg State College. She taught 40 years in the Chambersburg Area School District, with the majority of her career between Scotland Elementary School (4th grade) and the Chambersburg Area Middle School – South (6th grade).
She was a lifelong member of the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren where she participated in the choir and taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed spending time with family, reading, playing piano, shopping with her daughter and granddaughters, hosting Christmas parties for the extended family, and wintering in Leesburg, Florida, where she and her husband, Benjamin, owned a home for over 20 years.
The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers – Laura, Linda, Michelle, Shawn, Robin, and Molly – who afforded Jeanne the opportunity of remaining at home until her time of death. It takes a village to care for one another, and we have truly been blessed with family and caregivers along the journey.
Jeanne will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but we all know she was ready to be reunited with her husband, son, and all those who had gone before her. Her children give thanks to God for such a wonderful mother who always put her family first. Rest well, Mom – we love you!
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 20, 2025 in the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Church St., Chambersburg, PA with Reverends Alexandra Toms and Elizabeth Thorpe (Jeanne’s granddaughter and daughter) leading the service.
