Mrs. Jane Elizabeth (Brown) Smith, 96, of Cascade, MD, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2024 in WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital.

Born August 21, 1928 in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of the late Glenn Alfred and Thelma Margaret (Shover) Brown.

In her early life, Mrs. Smith attended Monterey and Catoctin schools. After graduation, she attended Waynesboro Business College where she received her degree in Business. 

She and her husband, the late Ashby L. “Smitty” Smith, were married on June 18, 1950 in Blue Ridge Summit, PA. They were together for 73 years when Mr. Smith passed away December 30, 2023.

In her early life, Mrs. Smith was employed as a secretary and switchboard operator at the Fort Ritchie Hospital where she met her husband. After raising her family of five children, she went to work at Cascade Elementary School as a cook in the cafeteria, retiring with almost 28 years of service.

She attended St. Stephen’s Community Church where she was active in many of the church and children’s activities. She loved to bake, sew and read mystery and thriller books. She also enjoyed music, singing and watching game shows.

She is survived by three children, Gary L. Smith and his wife, Darlene of Waynesboro, PA, Wayne A. Smith and his wife, Anita of Maugansville, MD and Cindy L. Smith of Cascade; 9 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 two great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two children, Shirley Smith and Charles Smith; and one sister, Glenda Gift.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 4, 2024 in St. Stephen’s Community Church, 25445 Highfield Road, Cascade, MD with Pastor Rebecca Cline officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade, MD.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Tuesday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
