Iris Alfreda Coffman Sharpes, 83 of 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, died Monday, February 13, 2012 at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village.
Born March 25, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Ira S. and Alfreda Elizabeth Wallace Coffman.
She was a graduate of Juniata College in 1947, and received a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Maryland 1966.
She was employed by the Washington County School System teaching at Williamsport Elementary School; and for 30 years at Lincolnshire Elementary School. From 1954-58, she was a secretary to the President of Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA.
Mrs. Sharpes was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren and served in various capacities over the years. She was also treasurer of the Fahrney-Keedy Auxiliary; and member of the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, the Washington County Retired Teachers Association, and the Washington County Historical Society.
Surviving is her husband Lowell V. Sharpes, Jr., whom she married in January, 2001; two step-sons, Douglas Allen Sharpes and wife Marilyn of Thurmont, and Robert Dale Sharpes and wife Bonnie of Broadway, Virginia; as well as her sister Joyce M. Coffman of Boonsboro, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-son, Lowell V. Sharpes, III.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, February 17, at the Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick and Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
