Gordon Lee Davis, 85, of Hagerstown, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 12, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Ruth Victoria Scherrer Davis, his wife of almost sixty two years whom he married on February 28, 1953.
Born on January 1, 1930, in Harrisonville, Maryland, he was the son of the late George William Davis, Sr. and Ida Lurene Ridgely Davis. Gordon served with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division.
He was employed with Westinghouse Corporation, where he met his wife; and for Bugle Linen Supply, Inc. He married the love of his life, Ruth Scherrer and later moved his young family from Baltimore to Hagerstown to manage a new branch for Bugle.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, Gordon and Ruth owned and operated the Tastee Freez in Chewsville, later renamed Gordon’s Drive In and Tastee Catering Service. In 1970 they took over Express Printing and Copy Center; opened Antietam Bee Supply; and owned Bee Tree Farms, Inc.
He was past-president and co founders of the Hagerstown Valley Apian Society; President of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association from 1980-81; and publisher of “The Beeline” for 15 years for the MSBA.
Gordon drove for Fujicolor Photo Express for eight years, where he earned the Northeast Region’s Driver of the Year for 1998 and was given and award for over 400,000 accident-free miles.
Formerly he and his family were members of Wayside Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. Since 1980 they have been members of Evangel Baptist Church serving as Sunday School Superintendent and ministered in numerous other areas.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Glen Lee Davis and wife Nancy of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Daniel Harold Davis and wife Mary Ann of Athens, Tennessee, George William Davis II and wife Vicky of Mount Airy, Maryland, Victoria May Davis of Hagerstown, Linda Lurene Davis Kaste and husband Christopher of Merrillville, Indiana, and Bette Lou Davis Evans and husband Thomas, also of Hagerstown. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte May Davis Staben.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Andrew Coffman Funeral Home at 40 E. Antietam Street, Hagerstown from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and 7:00pm – 9:00pm. The funeral service will be at 1:00pm on Monday, February 16, 2015 at his church, Evangel Baptist Church, followed by interment in the Garden of Devotion at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, both of Hagerstown. Military honors will be provided by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Davis’s name to his church, Evangel Baptist Church, 17922 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740; or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742.
