Genevieve "Jenny" (McGill) Waters,92, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Spiritrust Luther Ridge. She was born March 19, 1932, in Chambersburg, the daughter of the late Betsy (Banks) and LLoyd McGill. Jenny was born and raised in the Chambersburg Area. The daughter of the late J.Lloyd and Betsy Banks McGill. She matriculated in the local school district; and graduated from Chambersburg Business School after High School in 1950 in the top ten percent of her class. After high school, she started work at Letterkenny Army Depot as a clerk-typist. In January 1956, she became the first African American woman to be hired in a clerical position at the local Franklin County Courthouse, where she worked as a secretary in the Commissioner’s Office, Probation Department and Domestic Relations Office. She was also a relief secretary in the Judge’s Office. Jenny became the first African American woman, in March 1964, to be hired in a clerical position at a local bank. She became a clerk/teller at the then Valley National Bank and Trust Company. She eventually rose through the ranks to become secretary to the Executive Vice President. She was later promoted to Assistant Personnel Officer. In 1989, Jenny was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Human Resource Office. She is a graduate of the National Personnel School at the University of Colorado, Denver, CO. Jenny retired from Valley Bank & Trust Company in 1994 after thirty (30) years of service. Jenny had been a board member of various local organizations (Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary, Chambersburg Area Business Women’s Association, where served a term as President, and Chambersburg Election Board). She has served as President of the Chambersburg Community Improvement Association following the passing of her husband (Mike Waters). Jenny was a member of Unity in Christ Church where she served as a Trustee and on the usher board. She was an avid reader, enjoyed photography, daily walks, and gardening. Her favorites were yellow roses. Jenny was also a lover of small dogs; her last bestie was a miniature labradoodle named Elijah Valentine (Eli) who will miss his favorite treat of bacon. Her family and friends brought her great joy. She was affectionately called "Nana" and occasionally "Shorty" by her 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Jenny is survived by four children, W. Donald (Beany) Waters (Lois), Chambersburg; Kathleen Betsy (Chicki) Reed (Ted); Michelle Ann (Shelly) Lovett, Shippensburg; Stephen Derrick (Steve) Waters (Jill), North Carolina; two stepchildren, Michael Rideout (Vickie), Chambersburg, and Dwight Shaffer, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, Savilla (Tina) Jiles, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Donald F. (Mike) Waters and a daughter, Lisa C. Waters in 2007 and two sisters, Kathleen (infant), Lucy McGill Ransom and special cousin, William "Buzzy" William. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2024, at Unity Christ Church with the Rev. Lois Waters officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
