Gary Alvin Akers, Sr., 83, left Chambers Point Health Care Center in Chambersburg, PA to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was born on May 2, 1943, to the late Edison Amos and Cora Dacie (Spade) Akers in the Everett Hospital.
Gary was a graduate of Southern Fulton High School and worked as a HVAC technician having retired from Wilson College.
He enjoyed times with his family and functions at Criders United Brethren Church as well as traveling, trapping, hunting, fishing, taking care of his vegetable garden and reading. Gary’s interests included farming, tractors, antique cars (especially his 1955 Chevy pickup), livestock (he had a small flock of Jacob sheep), gospel, country and bluegrass music, trees and nature.
Gary was a devoted, and often chivalrous husband. He was a loving and doting father and grandfather. Gary was a godly, hard-working, humble, faithful, goofy, kind, generous, patient, and fun-loving man. He was always ready to watch a game/performance or lend a hand.
He is survived by his wife, Velma L. (Barton) Akers of 64 years; three sons: Gary A. (Esther) of St. Thomas, PA, Chris E.M. (Kim), and Pat W. (Becky) both of Chambersburg; one daughter, Loretta P. (Brent) Liechty of Orrstown; two brothers: Larry (Lois) Akers of Little Orleans, MD and Rex (Wendy) Akers or Needmore, PA, 13 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren, including three sets of twins.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Marvin and Ida (Jay) Barton, two brothers-in-law, John and Ralph Barton, a sister-in-law, Pauline (Barton, Mentzer) Black, a daughter, Tamela Sue and a son, Joseph David.
Gary’s funeral service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Sellers Funeral Home and Cremation Services. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, September 10 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the Funeral Service. A graveside service will be held at Akersville Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. following the funeral service.
