Fred R. Burkett, Sr., 81, of Greencastle, PA, went to his heavenly home on Friday, May, 3, 2024, at his home, after battling cancer for the past six months.

Born July 4, 1942, in Greencastle, PA, he was the son of the late Charles W. Burkett, Sr. and Ruth I. (Mullenix) Burkett. He was a lifelong resident of Greencastle.

He attended his early school years in a one room schoolhouse called Sunrise School, which was located on the corner of Grant Shook Rd. and Worleytown Rd., just down from his home.

He and his wife, Brenda M. (Philpott) Burkett would have been celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 28th of this year. They were married in Hagerstown, MD in 1974.

Fred was employed as a machinist and tool operator, working for what was formerly known as Grove Worldwide, and currently known as Manitowoc, here in Greencastle. He retired in 2007.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Fred was someone you could always count on to help out anyone in need. Always very loving but could also be stern when he needed to be. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, picking strawberries and watching westerns. He was thrilled when his favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2017! He was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. Above all, he loved his family, especially his grandkids and great grandkids!

In addition to his beloved wife, Brenda, Fred is survived by his four children: Sonya Sue Dean and her husband, Solomon, Tonya Lyn Shepherd and her husband, Ricardo, Fred R. Burkett, Jr. and his wife, Tina, and Wayne Anthony Burkett, all of Greencastle; four grandchildren: Solomon Dean, Jr., Haden Burkett, Lillyonia Burkett, Mya Shepherd; three great-granddaughters: Chloe Dean, Ivy Dean and Eve Dean; four siblings: Betty Leidig and Henry Burkett of Mercersburg, PA and Peggy Rhoades and her husband Denny and Jim C. Burkett and his wife, Lori of Greencastle and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: William E. Burkett, Charles W. Burkett, Jr., and Martha M. Philpott.
