Mr. Elvin Harold “Al” Blumberg, 93, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday morning, May 7, 2015, while being prayed for by an Angel of Hospice. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Walaka Yvonne Pennesi Blumberg, his loving wife of 53 years who preceded him in death on October 25, 2005.
Born February 10, 1922, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Irving and Alvena Scheller Blumberg. He graduated City College Evening High School, Baltimore.
From 1957 to 1982, Al worked as a dispatcher for Barrack O of the Maryland State Police, Hagerstown.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
Additionally, Al belonged to Medairy Lodge #1401, Williamsport; the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple Club, Cumberland; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Hagerstown Forest #95; 32 degree Scottish Rite, Cumberland; and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 378, Hagerstown.
Surviving is his granddaughter, Lisa A. Hewlett and husband Bill of Felton, Delaware; two great granddaughters, Amanda M. Hewlett and Krystal M. Ray; special caregivers, Cheryl A. Kataline, Carol L. Hose, Charlene K. Gearhart, and Diane Schiana di Cola; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, Al was preceded in death by his children, Ira Leslie Rock and Alvena E. Blumberg; as well as by his granddaughter, Samantha Carol Rock.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is handling the arrangements. The family will receive friends at his church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hagerstown, on Wednesday, May 13, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church on Wednesday beginning at 10:00 AM. The Rev. George A. Limmer will celebrate the mass. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
In lieu of lfowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Blumberg’s name to his church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 224 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.
