Donald W. Helfer of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 9, 2025 of natural causes, at the age of 91. Born on January 6th, 1934 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Herman R Helfer and Daisy O. Helfer of York, Pennsylvania, with whom resided until their death. He was the brother of Dorothy E (Helfer) Held and brother-in-law of John T Held, both of Gettysburg Pennsylvania, both deceased. He is survived by nephews Michael J. Held of Las Vegas, Nevada and Karl E. Held of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Donald was a kind and loving person to all that knew him. Despite mental disability, he was always cheery, always willing and wanting to give a helping hand with a smile on his face to whomever was present. He had a true love of life and interested in participating in whatever activities were available to him. He enjoyed music and playing the accordion, gymnastics and, in particular, his weekly trips to the ice rink, on which he was notably enthusiastic and quite accomplished. He looked forward to large family gatherings at reunions and holidays, and he will always be fondly remembered by those who experienced his presence and joy of life.
