Mr. Charles Robert “Bob” Swain, 95, of Hagerstown, died early Friday morning, April 15, 2022, at Martinsburg (WV) VA Medical Center. He was the husband of Betty Iline Poffenberger Swain who preceded him in death on March 17, 2018.
Born May 23, 1926, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Garrrott Mortimer and Margaret Imogene Jones Swain. He was a 1945 graduate of Boonsboro High School; and proud veteran of 87th Infantry Division, 345 Regiment of the United States Army, serving during World War II and recipient of the Bronze Star.
Bob was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Boonsboro.
He was also a member of Friendship Lodge #84, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and Past Patron of Queen Esther Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, both of Hagerstown; the Ali Ghan Shriners and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, 32nd degree, both of Cumberland.
Additionally, Bob was a member of Ralph Tagg, Jr. Chapter 14, Disabled American Veterans, W.D. Byron Post #1936, Veterans of Foreign War, and the Benevolent of Elks and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 378; and life member of Morris Frock American Legion, Post 42; all of Hagerstown.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by sisters Louise Burdette Mullendore and Janet Imogene Shumaker.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is handling arrangements. Memorial services will begin at his church, Trinity Lutheran Church, 64 South Main Street, Boonsboro, on Friday, April 29, at 10:30 AM, offered by the Masonic and Eastern Star Orders. At 11:00 AM, his pastor, Rev. Karl E. Muhlbach, will begin a service to celebrate Bob’s life. Military honors, offered by Joint Veterans Council and Marine Corps League of Washington County, and Bugles Across America, will follow.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Swain’s name to his church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 South Main Street, Boonsboro, Maryland 21713.
