Mrs. Betty Iline Poffenberger Swain, 89, of Hagerstown, died Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2018, at Somerford House & Place, Hagerstown.  She was the wife of C. Robert Swain, her husband of 70 years, whom she married on November 1, 1947.

Born April 13, 1928, in Sharpsburg, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Roy and Ada Mae Colbert Poffenberger.  She was a 1946 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

Betty worked for 39 year, retiring in 1985, from Brandt Cabinet Works, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Boonsboro.

Betty is Past Worthy Matron of Queen Esther Chapter 3, Order of the Eastern Star; and Past Grand Electra of the Maryland Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.  She also served as chairman of the first Maryland Grand Chapter Session, Order of the Eastern Star, held in Hagerstown.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her faithful and loving companion, Mindy; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret and Martha Jane Wageley; and four brothers, Carl, Woodrow, James, and David Poffenberger.

The family will receive friends at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, on Friday, March 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Queen Esther Chapter 3, OES, will offer a memorial service at 7:00 PM.   A memorial service will be Saturday, March 24, at 11:00 AM, at her church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 Main Street, Boonsboro, Maryland  21713, with her pastors, Rev. Robert L. Lewis, Jr., assisted by Rev. Joseph I. Donovan.  Inurnment will follow in Boonsboro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be made to her church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 South Main Street, Boonsboro, Maryland  21713; or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland  21742.
