Mrs. Barbara Ann Schlosser Chambers, known fondly by many as “Mert,” 88, of Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at Quincy Village, Quincy, Pa.
She was the wife of the late Arthur F. Chambers Jr., whom she married June 23, 1951, and who preceded her in death on March 24, 1983.
Born April 30, 1928, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Roger S. and Isabel Shafer Schlosser.
Raised in the Funkstown and Hagerstown areas, she graduated from Hagers-town High School with the Class of 1946.
While in high school, she played on the girls basketball team and was captain. As a young woman, she was a lifeguard at Fountain Head Country Club.
She raised three children as a homemaker and seamstress, and had moved to a farm in Greencastle, Pa., where she enjoyed caring for her horses.
Following the death of her husband, she moved back to Hagerstown.
Mrs. Chambers was, with her husband, an avid member of the Benevolent and Protect Order of Elks, Lodge 378, Hagerstown.
Surviving are her children, Susan S. Kuhn and husband, Mark L., of State Line; Mary E. Bock and husband, Michael J., of Greencastle; and Arthur F. Chambers III, and wife, Judy, of Chambersburg; grandchildren, Barry James Peck and wife, Misty, of Sabillasville, and Ian and Eli Bock, both of Greencastle; her great-grandchildren, Madison and Makinna Peck of Upton; stepgreat-granddaughters, Leeah and Leesa Hawes of Sabillasville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, Barbara was preceded in death by an infant great-granddaughter, McKinnley Peck; as well as by siblings, Phillip, Roger “Buzz” Jr., Victor “Tom” and Clarence “Jack” Schlosser; Isabel “Susie” Garver; Margaret “Peggy” Jones; Jane Henson; Sarah “Skip” Ward; and Elizabeth “Bett” Cochran.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagers-town, is handling the arrangements. There will be no visiting at the funeral home. Private graveside services will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Chambers’ name to Quincy Village Nursing Facility, sent in care of the Office of Mission Support, 6596 Orphanage Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
