Mrs. Amy Linn Lehrman Kerstein, 77, of Hagerstown died Thursday afternoon, December 17, 2020, at her residence surround by her husband, caregiver, and hospice, who kept her comfortable and pain free during her passing. She was the wife of Mr. Robert M. Kerstein, her husband of 46 years.
Born November 15, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Harry Albert and Bernice Sally Nassau Lehrman. She graduated Harrisburg Academy and Penn State University, where she studied teaching.
After graduating, she taught in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Later, she moved to Silver Spring, met her husband, Robert, in 1974. After a brief courtship they married on November 23, 1974; and settled in Hagerstown.
Amy quickly committed herself to the Jewish community, joining Congregation B’Nai Abraham, Hagerstown. She also became an active participant in her synagogue sisterhood, locally and nationally.
She was interested in the arts and philanthropic. She was instrumental, with others in bringing a symphony orchestra to Hagerstown; and was a supportive member of Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. Additionally she was supportive of Hagerstown Community College Foundation and numerous other charities to help those less fortunate than herself.
Amy loved life. She was gregarious and spoke to everyone. Not only did she enjoy reading newspapers and playing cards, she loved playing golf, dancing, the ocean and traveling the world. Above all, however, she was a loyal and best friend to many. She stayed in touch with most all that she met; but never forgot her nuclear family, for which she was a wonderful, caring mother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Everyone she met was ever important and people were blessed to have known her.
In her later years, she enjoyed wintering in Boca Raton, Florida, where she enjoyed the sunshine
and fun with family and friends.
In addition to her wonderful husband and soulmate, Amy is survived by her son Dr. Andrew H. Kerstein and his wife Emily of Overland Park, Kansas; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Samuel and Beatrice; her sisters Judy Opper of Boca Raton, and Sunny Gold and husband Bob Steinmetz of Huntersville, North Carolina; her sister in-law, Sue Sherman and husband Joel of Cambridge, Massachusetts; as well as her care giver Kimberly “Jake” Hildebrand and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown, is assisting the family with arrangements. There will not be visiting at the funeral home. Friends may attend a funeral service held graveside at B’Nai Abraham Cemetery, 17517 Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown, on Monday, December 21, at 2:00 PM. Rabbi Ariel D. Plost will officiate.
