May 1 full moon to brighten night skies

The full moon will reach its peak illumination at 1:23 p.m. Friday, May 1, marking a seasonal transition celebrated for centuries by various cultures.

Commonly referred to as the Flower Moon, the lunar event earns its name from the abundance of spring wildflowers that typically emerge during this time of year. Native American and European traditions have historically used these lunar cycles to track seasonal events, resulting in alternative names such as the Budding Moon, Frog Moon, and Planting Moon.

While the mathematical peak occurs during the afternoon, skywatchers can enjoy the celestial display on the nights immediately preceding and following May 1, provided weather conditions remain clear.
