Jubilee marks 30 years of July 4 celebration, this time marking 250th b-day

WAYNESBORO, Pa. – Help light up the sky in Waynesboro on July 4.

“We’re trying to generate interest in sponsorship and donations early for the Waynesboro Summer Jubilee fireworks display,” said Holly Miller, president of the board of directors for the annual celebration.

“A lot of people don’t know that Jubilee pays for the fireworks – they assume the Borough of Waynesboro does and that’s not the case. So without assistance, funding can be incredibly challenging. We want to make sure we are able to put on a great show and put it on consistently, year after year,” she added.

Organizers have added a dunking booth to garner additional revenue, Miller said. “We will line up ‘local celebrities’ as well as middle and high school coaches and athletes, etc. We need volunteers for that.”

Funds also will be raised by raffling off gift baskets that will be displayed in the kids craft tent. “We’ll have volunteers walk through crowds with the baskets to encourage more ticket sales,” Miller added.

New to the celebration, now in its 30th year, is a sensory tent, sponsored by Middletown Valley Bank, according to Miller. “It will be very neuro divergent – a friendly area for people to decompress from the over stimulation of the crowd. It will be staffed and monitored to make sure it’s being used for the right reasons.”

The Jubilee at 500 E. Main St. will kick off with the Kid’s 1-mile fun run at 7:30 a.m., followed by the FireCracker 5K, sponsored by Patriot Federal Credit Union, at 8 a.m. Miller issued a plea for volunteer and Pennsylvania certified flaggers for the 5K.

Craft and food vendors will be set up from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. at C.V. Avenue and head east on Main Street before turning onto Broad Street and moving to Memorial Park. Rodney Cool, owner of Brio Coffeehouse, took over organizing the parade from Brothers of the Brush, which led the activity for decades.

From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. visitors can patronize by a tent for kid vendors – children under 17 selling their handmade items as well as a tent featuring crafts – sand art, foam magnets and jewelry – for kids. Each child gets one free craft, with the option of purchasing additional kits for $5 each, according to Miller. Volunteers also will offer temporary tattoos and glitter for children.

There will be free Inflatables sponsored by Jesus Alive Ministries of Waynesboro.

The flag raising is set for 11 a.m., followed by entertainment by bands that are still being booked, Miller said.

Miller encouraged area residents to be generous in their support of the fireworks display by following the donation link.
