Institute for Retired Persons Schedule Week of April 15

CHAMBERSBURG – The Institute for Retired Persons (IRP) in Chambersburg is set to host a captivating series of lectures and activities for its diverse membership in the coming weeks. The agenda promises a rich array of educational and entertaining sessions. On Tuesday, April 16, prior to the first lecture, attendees will vote in-person to determine the destination for next semester’s bus trip. The three proposals under consideration are:

  1. A trip to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, including a guided tour of the mansion, tour of the gardens, time in the Education Center/Museum, and a 45-minute Potomac River Cruise, with lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn (estimated price: $150).
  2. A visit to Dodona Manor, the home of General George Marshall located in Leesburg, VA, followed by a trip to the National Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport (estimated price: $95).
  3. A tour of historic provincial forts, including George Washington’s Office in Winchester, VA, the ruins of Fort Loudon in Winchester, Fort Frederick near Clear Spring, MD, and Fort Loudon west of Chambersburg (estimated price: $90).

If unable to attend the April 16th vote, members who plan to participate in the bus trip can submit their vote by email to Joyce Horst at [email protected] by the same date. The lecture schedule for the week includes:

  • Monday, April 15 (9 a.m., Zoom): “Strange Glow: The Story of Radiation” by Dr. Timothy Jorgensen
  • Tuesday, April 16 (9 a.m., In-Person): “The Origin & Evolution of Al Qaeda and ISIL” by John Ricca, and “A Visit from Ward Hill Lamon: Friend & Bodyguard of Abraham Lincoln” by Bob O’Connor
  • Wednesday, April 17 (9 a.m., In-Person): “Patrick Henry Through the Eyes of His Fifth Great-Grandson” by Patrick Henry Jolly
  • Thursday, April 18 (9 a.m., In-Person): “An American Miracle: The Making of a Constitution” by Dr. Llyod Muller, and the IRP Members Meeting with Dr. Kathy Worthington, IRP Director.
