Healthy Shippensburg Youth Advisory Council

SHIPPENSBURG–The Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition (SCRC) is forming a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) as part of its Healthy Shippensburg Coalition. High school students that live in the Shippensburg Area School District are invited to learn more and attend a free kickoff event on Thursday April 13, 2023, from2:30pm-9:30 pm at Shippensburg University. Transportation from the high school will be provided as needed, along with a free meal, activities, campus tour, and attendance at the STOMP at Luhrs Performing Arts Centers. Registration is required: http://bit.ly/3nAIF54

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will include students in middle and high school from the Shippensburg Area School District, including homeschooled students and those in alternative or cyber schools. This group of school students will help to make decisions related to youth resiliency and reducing youth substance use and abuse. YAC provides an opportunity for youth voices to be heard and to help give perspectives to community programming, education, and events. They will be able to share ideas and perspectives, increase communication skills, goal setting, and develop leadership abilities. Middle school students attended a similar free kickoff event in December 2022.

The Shippensburg Community Resource Coalition (SCRC) is a community-university partnership and a Shippensburg University Center for Excellence that provides services to the community and learning opportunities for university faculty, staff, and students. The SCRC is a collaborative effort to provide quality social services and youth programs that are accessible and safe and that recognize the dignity and worth of each person. Our goal is to help community members reach their full potential. We work to fulfill our mission in the following ways:

  • Working with existing programs in surrounding communities to encourage them to provide services in Shippensburg.
  • Regularly assessing community needs and resources.
  • Creating new services as necessary.
  • Partnering with other community programs to strengthen our collective efforts.
