HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Recreation Supervisor Amy Riley presented the update, highlighting a wide range of programming, including outdoor events, fitness initiatives, youth activities and expanded access to city facilities.
Among the major changes this year, the city’s Independence Day fireworks celebration has been moved to July 3 in coordination with Washington County’s schedule.
Officials are also preparing for the opening of Potterfield Pool over Memorial Day weekend. The facility, managed through a partnership with the YMCA, will offer memberships, swim camps, fitness programs and group rentals throughout the summer season.
Riley said the department continues to expand access to recreation through a variety of program formats, including indoor, outdoor and virtual options, all available through the city’s parks and recreation guide and online registration system.
Seasonal events are already underway, with the city’s popular yard sale series launching this spring. The first event is sold out, with additional dates scheduled throughout the year.
The city will also host the finale of the Hub City 100 Miler program on April 18 at City Park, where participants will complete the final mile of the community fitness initiative. Organizers expect more than 1,000 participants.
Additional programming includes:
- A summer movie series and public events at City Park
- The August Plein Air Festival
- Fall Fest in September
- Ongoing use of downtown spaces such as University Plaza and the band shell for community gatherings and rentals
Historic attractions are also part of the seasonal rollout. The Jonathan Hager House and City Park Train Hub have reopened for the season and will now offer expanded hours, including Sundays.
Recreation officials noted continued activity at the city’s golf course, which operates year-round and offers tournaments, seasonal passes and a discount-based loyalty program known as the Divot Club.
City parks are officially opening for the season, and officials encouraged residents to take advantage of amenities, including new additions such as two swans recently introduced at City Park.
The department is also seeking additional instructors to expand programming across fitness, arts and other community interests, reflecting the broad range of recreational opportunities offered in Hagerstown.
City council members emphasized that recreation programming remains a key part of community engagement and quality of life, encouraging residents to participate in events and register for programs throughout the spring and summer months.
