GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Mayor Ben Thomas Jr. will lead Greencastle’s Mayor’s 9/11 Walk of Unity at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, bringing together residents, veterans, first responders, families, churches and community organizations for a morning of remembrance.
Participants will gather on Eastern Avenue near the John L. Grove Medical Center, south of East Baltimore Street, before stepping off at 8:30 a.m.
The walk will conclude at the Greencastle-Antrim Veterans Memorial in front of Greencastle Police Headquarters, 60 N. Washington St. A brief remembrance program is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
The event will honor the civilians, military personnel, firefighters, emergency medical service providers and police officers who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Organizers also will recognize those who have died or experienced lasting health effects related to recovery work following the attacks.
The route represents 2,071 steps of remembrance, symbolizing the community’s shared commitment to honor the victims and reflect on the unity that followed the attacks.
Residents who are unable to complete the walking route are invited to meet at the Veterans Memorial before the 9 a.m. program.
Community members are encouraged to display the American flag, perform an act of kindness and participate in efforts that reflect the national unity and service that followed 9/11.
The event is open to people of all ages. Children should be accompanied by an adult. The program is subject to change because of weather conditions.
The community will commemorate Patriot Day on Friday, Sept. 11.
