GREENCASTLE — Kindal Rice went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs as Greencastle-Antrim rallied from a four-run deficit to beat visiting Waynesboro 7-5 on Thursday in a Mid-Penn Colonial softball matchup.
The win came a day after the Blue Devils (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season, falling 5-1 to Shippensburg.
“It’s great for our girls because after that tough loss yesterday, we needed something like this,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “It’s just a different team than I had last year, that team that made that state run. It’s younger; I have a whole new infield, a whole new outfield. They’re still learning, and we’re trying to figure it out. We’ll get there, and we’ll be beating some teams up.”
The Blue Devils, the PIAA Class 5A state runners-up last year, found themselves down 4-0 against Waynesboro (1-4) at the end of the second inning.
They cut it to 4-2 in the third before erupting for five runs in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. The Maidens scored the game’s final run in the sixth.
“The girls adjusted well, and I’m proud of them,” DeCarli said. “A win’s a win, and that’s the kind of win that can get you going on the right track. I’ll take it, especially going into Easter. Next week we have Northern, Big Spring and South Western, so we better be able to roll.”
Miranda Martin had a double, single and RBI for Greencastle. Kiersten Swain also had two hits, Erika Hoover had two RBIs, and Kylie Kerns scored two runs. Blue Devils starter Lydia Pryke went five innings to earn the win, allowing four runs (one earned), two hits and eight walks while striking out eight.
“We haven’t been hitting great lately, but we’ll get there,” DeCarli said. “The coaches are good at coaching, and we’ll get them where we need to be. The potential is there. We just have to get that potential out.
“This team is one game at a time. Our goal is to get a good seed in districts, and then you never know what happens. We didn’t win a district title last year, but we got a good seed in states and made a good run. This team is capable, but they’re young and they’ve got to learn.”
For Waynesboro, Lydia Shank doubled and singled, Emma Bradley had an RBI double and scored two runs, and Aly Virden and Rylee Miller each drove in a run.
