Greencastle fire appears not suspicious but remains under investigation

GREENCASTLE – The cause of the fire that destroyed the main building Rockwell Lumber Co. west of Greencastle, Nov. 18 is being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police, who say it does not appear suspicious.

Police said the blaze at 3865 Buchanan Trail East does not appear to be suspicious at this time, but the cause “remains under active investigation.” Rockwell Lumber Co. is located between Greencastle and Upton.

Anyone with information is asked to call police 717-264-5161 and all replies will be kept confidential, police said.

The initial call came in at 6:21 p.m., then more people reported the building fire, according to Fire Chief Kevin Barnes of the Greencastle Rescue Hose Co. Crews arrived to a well-involved fire at the sawmill/lumber operation, Barnes said.

Twenty-one units from both Pennsylvania and Maryland fought the blaze, which was knocked down by 7:43 p.m. though overhaul and cleanup continued until 10 p.m. No injuries were reported.

In addition to the Rescue Hose Co., Pennsylvania responders came from MMP&W in Mercersburg, Waynesboro, Marion, St. Thomas, New Franklin and Letterkenny. Maryland companies on the scene included Long Meadow, Maugansville, Smithsburg, Leitersburg and the Washington County Rehab Unit.
