Greencastle event planned to help local family hit by sudden tragedy

GREENCASTLE – The public is invited to a Saturday, Aug. 9, event planned to help members of the Schindel family during a time of tragedy. Event planners said raffles, baked good, crafts and mini photo sessions will be available all day from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The family was preparing for their 5-year-old son, Carter’s, cerebral palsy surgery when tragedy struck. James Schindel, a loving husband, father of four and friend to many, suffered a fatal heart attack. He worked as a truck driver. This fundraiser honors his memory and helps ease the financial burden of both the family’s loss and their son’s medical needs.

Tracy Sullivan, organizer of the event, asked, “Let’s rally around this incredible family with love, compassion and support.”

The event will be at Green Grove Gardens Flea Market in Greencastle, and the rain date is Aug. 16. All proceeds go directly to the Schindel Family. Those who can’t make it to the event can still donate at gofund.me/09e2d1a3.

“Every gift – big or small – helps lift this incredible family in their time of need,” Sullivan noted.

Sullivan is owner of Dragonfly Photography, and she will be booking mini sessions at the event.

Carter is still a candidate for surgery, which likely will occur next spring or summer. The Schindel’s other son, J.T., was coached by his father. He learned of his father’s death on the day baseball all-stars began and went on to play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in his honor.

Carter was diagnosed with cerebral palsy during the covid pandemic, so his father was required to wait in the parking lot, while his mother received the diagnosis alone, organizers said.
