GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Local student Grace Monday of the Franklin County Puppy Raising Club was part of a small group of college-bound students selected by the Seeing Eye to receive over $56,000 in scholarships.
These scholarships were awarded to students who raised at least two Seeing Eye puppies while maintaining high academic achievement and community involvement. Grace has raised six Seeing Eye puppies since 2019 including black, yellow and chocolate Labrador retrievers, all with the intention that the dogs may go on to be guide dogs for those with vision loss or blindness.
The Seeing Eye is an organization that breeds and trains dogs to become Seeing Eye dogs for blind individuals and trains owners on how to handle and care for their animals. Families raising dogs must offer a loving home where they teach the puppies obedience, house manners and socialization, as well as bring them to regular club meetings.
Grace told LocalNews1 that she intends to use her scholarship at Hagerstown Community College studying general education courses before finalizing a degree field. She said while she does have an 8-month-old puppy of her own, she wants to focus on her education before taking on more Seeing Eye dogs.
