Go for a StoryWalk® Sunday

Kids look for shapes in the trees on the story trail in November. Campfires and s’mores are also part of the activities during The Institute’s StoryWalk® Sundays. PROVIDED PHOTO

WAYNESBORO—Area families are invited to attend The Institute’s StoryWalk® Sundays adventure for kids on Sunday, Feb. 13 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

Kids will enjoy a guided walk along the story trail as they read the book, then make a special craft project to take home—and warm up with a campfire and yummy s’mores!

February’s storybook is “The Mitten” by Jan Brett, held over a month when January’s event was snowed out.

“Based on a Ukrainian folk tradition, the story is a whimsical tale of winter woodland animals climbing into a mitten lost in the snow—each animal larger than the last. Children love the story as the succession of animals leads up to a big brown bear,” said Pam Rowland, The Institute’s education director.

The event is FREE, but pre-registration is required by Feb. 10. To register, email to: [email protected] or call 717-762-0373. Limited to 20 children.

Children in grades K–5 may be dropped off and picked up at 3 p.m. All families are welcome, but activities are geared for preschool and elementary age kids.

The stories posted on the StoryWalk® trail at Pine Hill Park will change monthly, and plans call for a special event to accompany each one on the second Sunday of the month. On March 13, the book will be “The Wind Blew” by Pat Hutchins.

Pine Hill’s StoryWalk® trail, an Institute project, was funded in part by Summit Endowment, Marge Kiersz and Rouzerville Business Association, with in-kind support from Washington Township, Hopewell Manufacturing, Waynesboro Area School

District “Be the Village,” and Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library.

Additional support is from The Institute’s Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation, The John R. Hershey Jr. and Anna L. Hershey Family Foundation, Alma W. Oyer, APX Enclosures, Inc., and The Carolyn Terry Eddy Family: Carolyn, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin. Facility support courtesy of Washington Township
