Franklin County to talk hazard mitigation

CHAMBERSBURG– The Franklin County Department of Emergency Services will host a combined kick-off and risk assessment meeting as part of a five-year update for the county’s Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). The meeting will be held from 1-3 p.m., Dec. 15, at the Franklin County Department of Emergency Services, 390 New York Ave., Chambersburg.

During this meeting, participants will hear a progress report on the 2023 hazard mitigation plan update and will have the opportunity to provide input. Public feedback is important and will lead to a more thorough, comprehensive plan.

The HMP outlines the natural and man-made hazards that are prevalent in Franklin County and proposes actions or projects that can be implemented ahead of disasters to mitigate loss and damages. The HMP is a foundational document that helps define the threat environment for all emergency preparedness and planning efforts in the county and supports the goals and objectives identified in the Pennsylvania State Hazard Mitigation Plan. More importantly, the HMP enables the municipalities in Franklin County, which adopt this plan, to compete for federal disaster mitigation funding.

Franklin County’s current Hazard Mitigation Plan is available on the county website, https://bit.ly/3AXonGS
