Franklin County Recognizes Reentry Week

CHAMBERSBURG– The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed April 14-20, 2024, to be Reentry Week in Franklin County and are encouraging residents to support individuals who are returning to their communities after being released from jail.

More than 73,000 Pennsylvanians are estimated to be incarcerated; another 171,000 are under community supervision. Locally, an average of 132 individuals are released from Franklin County Jail each month. As these individuals reenter society, they can face a complex transition and often encounter hurdles regarding employment, housing, transportation, substance abuse treatment and mental health care.

The Franklin Together Reentry Coalition works to build a system of care that empowers and supports justice-involved individuals and their families in achieving success while reducing recidivism and improving public safety. The organization strives to reduce stigma, bias and cultural stereotypes while working to engage the community by offering peer groups, supportive services and other resources to assist those returning from incarceration.

“We must recognize that individuals who have been incarcerated deserve a chance at being reintegrated back into community life. It is essential to treat them as individuals and offer our unwavering support to those who are dedicated to turning their lives around by providing them with ample opportunities and necessary resources,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “Supporting the successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals is undeniably beneficial for our communities and is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

By recognizing Reentry Week in Franklin County, the commissioners are calling upon residents to support these reintegration efforts and to understand that these ex-offenders can become contributing members within Franklin County communities.

As part of Reentry Week, the Franklin Together Reentry Coalition invites the public to participate in several community activities, including a Reentry Simulation from 1-4 p.m. April 16 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Chambersburg.
