CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Franklin County Commissioners have emphasized the importance of keeping motorcyclists safe by declaring May to be Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Franklin County.

Motorcycle riding is not just a favorite form of transportation; it is also a popular recreation activity across the commonwealth and throughout the U.S. Pennsylvania is home to nearly 800,000 licensed motorcyclists. With that many motorcyclists on the road, it is important that all motorists remember to share roads and highways responsibly for everyone’s safety.

Likewise, motorcyclists can take advantage of free training courses through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s free Motorcycle Safety Program to improve their skills and ultimately reduce the number of motorcycle crashes and fatalities.

“Although May is designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, it’s important that all of us prioritize motorcycle safety year-round,” said Commission Chairman Dean Horst. “Franklin County is proud to support ABATE of Pennsylvania, PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Dealers Association in highlighting the importance of protecting motorcyclists on our roads—both here in Franklin County and across the commonwealth.”

By recognizing Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Franklin County, commissioners are encouraging all residents to pay attention to motorcycles and to recognize the importance of staying alert, practicing safe driving techniques and promoting motorcycle safety.

PennDOT provides information on its Motorcycle Safety Program as well as helpful tips and reminders for motorcyclists on its website, www.pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/motorcyclists
