HAGERSTOWN – With heartfelt emotion and standing ovations, former NBA player and Hagerstown native Dennis Scott has been presented with the Key to the City during a community celebration. The event drew local leaders, residents and family members to honor Scott’s journey from Jonathan Street to national prominence and his lasting impact on his hometown.

The initiative to recognize Scott was led by Councilwoman Ericka Bell, whose efforts were credited as instrumental during the ceremony. Scott began his remarks by thanking her for bringing the idea forward.

“Without you putting your first step forward and taking it to the board, we’re not standing here today,” he said. “You put all these people together because of your idea.”

Scott, now in his mid-50s, reflected on the uphill battles he faced as a young man growing up in Hagerstown in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He described the challenges of being told he would fail, especially coming from the historically underserved Jonathan Street community.

“They said I wasn’t going to make it,” Scott said. “Nobody makes it out of Hagerstown. Nobody makes it from Jonathan Street.”

Despite those doubts, Scott pursued his dreams with what he called “blind faith.” He promised his parents he would get them out of Hagerstown, attend college, play college basketball and eventually make it to the NBA, all of which he did.

Throughout the event, Scott emphasized the importance of resilience and hard work, drawing from personal experiences that continue to shape his message. He shared his recent accomplishment of earning two college degrees later in life, inspired by a challenge from his late mother.

“She brought all of us together to celebrate, and I’m still alive to see it,” he said.

Scott also spoke about a conversation with a young girl at the Boys and Girls Club earlier that day, who asked why he came to Hagerstown. “Because God told me to come give y’all a message that was given to me a long time ago: Hard work never lies. People do.”

The audience responded with applause and tears as Scott’s words resonated deeply with many in attendance, especially those familiar with his roots.

The event marked more than just a personal milestone for Scott. It served as a symbolic moment for Hagerstown, illustrating the potential of individuals who come from neighborhoods often overlooked. His story, as echoed by city leaders and community members, stands as a reminder of the power of determination and the importance of celebrating hometown heroes.
