Final concert of WCCA season: Bennie and the Jets Live

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Community Concert Association presents the final concert of its 2024-2025 season, Bennie and the Jets, on Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at Waynesboro Area Senior High School’s Oyer Auditorium.

At age 21, Greg Ransom was playing piano in a downtown hotel bar when the owner of the hotel requested an Elton John song. Greg played “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues.” The hotel owner approached him afterwards and told him he sounded like Elton vocally, and that he should consider putting on the hat and glasses and forming a tribute band.

By 1995, Bennie and The Jets was formed with Greg Ransom on piano and vocals, Dan Moraski on guitar and backing vocals, Bob Lilja on drums and backing vocals and Ken Walpurgis on bass. They played two local gigs in the Springfield area before receiving a call from a nationally know entertainment broker who needed an Elton band, so Greg sent him a tape.

From that day forward Bennie and the Jets became an international touring act. Bob Lilja was soon replaced with Steve Lawton on drums and backing vocals and Ken Walpurgis was replaced with Mike Gibbs on bass and backing vocals. This remains their current line-up. Bennie and the Jets has performed around the world for a wide variety of venues.

Single tickets for $25 and new subscriptions for $50 for the 2025-2026 season (six concerts) are available at the door and online at www.waynesboropaconcerts.org. New subscribers may attend this concert for free. Subscriptions include concerts hosted by Gettysburg and Hagerstown, community concert associations.

Concerts for the 2025-2026 season, “A Touch of Class”, include Bronx Wanderers, Pianomania, The Waddington Brothers, The Limeliters, Analisa and John and GQ (Gentlemen’s Quartet).

Students from kindergarten through high school are invited to attend for free. Those in K-8 grades must be accompanied by a paying adult.

All WCCA concerts are held on Sundays at 3 p.m. in the WASH auditorium.

WCCA awards a Joseph Bowers Scholarship and the Kowallis Family Scholarship each spring to a graduating WASH student(s) who will pursue further music study in college.
