Families gather for Buttonwood kite celebration

WAYNESBORO, Pa – Dozens of colorful kites filled the sky Saturday afternoon during the first annual kite flying event at Renfrew, celebrating National Kite Month. More than 40 people attended, bringing a wide variety of kites—some large, some small, and several handmade designs.

Among the fliers was a visitor from York County who joined families, children and longtime residents in the springtime tradition. Some older participants recalled flying kites at Renfrew years ago and said they were happy to see the pastime revived for a new generation.

The event was organized by Buttonwood as part of its 30th Annual Kite Fly celebration, held in partnership with Hooverville Elementary School in Waynesboro. The gathering featured free kite flying for all ages, expert demonstrations by brothers Sam and George Adams—both master kite fliers—and a Build‑a‑Kite workshop open to everyone for a $1 materials donation.

Each participant also received a free raffle ticket for a new kite.

Underwriting support for the event came from Buchanan Auto Park, with additional contributions from Today’s Horizon Fund donors including The Nora Roberts Foundation; Alma W. Oyer; Marge Kiersz; APX Enclosures; Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson; and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle and Kim Larkin. Facility support was provided by the Waynesboro Area School District.
