Essential fireplace safety tips can keep your family warm and safe

CRITTENDEN, Ky. – There’s nothing quite like the glow of a fireplace to mark the start of the fall season.

Whether it’s gathering with loved ones, curling up with a good book or adding a touch of style to your living space, fireplaces create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere in any home. But as the cooler months arrive, fireplace safety should be top mind alongside comfort and design.

“Fireplaces are meant to enhance your home, not cause worry,” said Garry Scott, vice president of marketing at Covington-based Napoleon Products. “With a few simple habits, families can enjoy the warmth, style and peace of mind that comes with a well-prepared fireplace.”

While a good gas fireplace from a reputable manufacturer is very safe, Napoleon recommends a few key practices to help keep all fireplaces safe and stress-free, whether you’re using a wood or gas fireplace:

Book your annual inspection: Have a certified professional inspect your fireplace, chimney and venting system to ensure everything is working properly, free of blockages and compliant with current safety standards.

Maintain a safe clearance: Keep at least three feet of space around your fireplace, moving furniture, blankets, decorative items and other flammable materials out of harm’s way. A clear zone around the fire reduces the risk of accidental ignition.

Test and maintain alarms: Ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are functioning correctly. Replace batteries if needed and consider installing additional alarms in rooms near fireplaces for enhanced safety.

Never leave a wood fire unattended: Always ensure your fireplace is extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. Staying present and attentive while a fire is burning is key to preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of everyone in your home.

Keep your wood fireplace clean: Remove ash buildup from wood-burning fireplaces regularly and ensure vents on gas or electric fireplaces remain unobstructed to ensure proper airflow and safe operation. Routine cleaning improves performance and reduces potential fire hazards.

Napoleon designs industry-leading indoor and outdoor fireplaces with both style and safety in mind. This fall, families can lean into cozy moments knowing their fireplace is prepared to perform.
