Dining out: Stoners on the Square, a good place to unwind

MERCERSBURG – If you’re visiting the historic town of Mercersburg, one stop on your agenda has to be Stoners on the Square for a delicious lunch or dinner. The historic dining spot is located at 5 N. Main St., directly across the street from Stoners Mansion House and Inn.

Every day (except on Tuesdays when they are closed) Stoners offers a unique blend of daily food and drink specials. Mondays is all about their burgers, Wednesdays is the chef’s special, Thursdays are Mug Club Night for members only, then on the weekends they offer prime rib. If you are visiting on a Sunday, stop in for their early brunch specials.

On the evening of my visit, I started with my usual lemonade as a beverage and the pierogies as my appetizer. They came with a topping of caramelized onions and a side of sour cream. It was a generous helping for an appetizer and would have made a tasty meal in and of itself. I followed the starter with a house salad that was crisp and fresh with tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions.

For my entrée, I chose one of the night’s specials, the crab and shrimp risotto. It was a perfect blend of cheese, crab meat and rice, with six large shrimp mixed in and a unique blend of herbs and seasoning. It should be noted that this dish is not part of their normal menu, but if it is on the specials list the night you visit, I highly recommend it. For dessert, I had to go with a fall favorite, pumpkin pie with whipped cream. It is pumpkin season after all.

While the risotto is not always available, there are many other tasty options to select from. The menu offers various cuts of steak, made to your specific order, crab cakes, chicken tenders, the classic fish and chips and if you’re in the mood for Italian, shrimp or chicken cavatappi awaits. They also have a variety of specialty sandwiches and burgers, including Reuben’s, crab cake sandwiches, paninis made with prime rib or turkey, chicken quesadillas or their famous chicken “on the square” sandwich.

The diner, which is owned by Mark and Heidi Stoner, features a small dining room in the front along with a full bar, and in the back are two more dining sections. The theme for the restaurant is both causal and a bit whimsical, with the large gorilla plush in the corner captures one’s attention upon entering.

Stoners on the Square is opened daily at 11 a.m. and is closed on Tuesdays.
