Dining out: Lizzy’s, the treasure of Antrim Township

GREENCASTLE-ANTRIM — Traveling along 316 through Greencastle-Antrim on your way to Mercersburg, you will see a sign on your right with a unique name written on it, Lizzy’s. This small roadside diner offers a much bigger punch than its simple exterior projects. The punch, a wonderful dining experience.

Lizzy’s is a family-owned business under the leadership of Michael and Emily Thorne. After moving to the region in 2019, they sought an opportunity to exploit their culinary backgrounds and found it with Lizzy’s Restaurant, which was formerly known as Hill Crest Restaurant.

Their mission is to preserve the legacy of the Lizzy’s brand while at the same time providing a unique dining experience for visitors and community members alike. Their passion is to use fresh ingredients to produce delicious meals made from scratch using fresh produce and dairy from local farms.

The inside of the dining room is about what one might expect from a roadside diner. Plenty of seating with booths and tables, whimsical diner décor on the walls and a friendly staff ready to greet you with a smile as soon as you walk in the door.

The menu is loaded with all the diner classics such as a variety of burgers including the Lizzy’s Signature Burger and their famous, Pittsburger. A monster sandwich made with a ¼ lb. of beef, topped with cheese, BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw and fresh cut fries.

If burgers aren’t on your mind, there are hot dogs, wraps, subs and a large selection of specialty sandwiches. Other meal options include a selection of specialty bowls made with a selection of chicken, cheesesteak and mushroom bacon and Swiss. If you’re trying to watch the beltline, Lizzy’s also has a unique selection of salads that feature chicken, crab, cheesesteak and traditional varieties like Caesar and chef salads.

For my visit, I started with an appetizer of crabby fries. Fresh cut fries topped with melted cheddar cheese and grilled crab meat. I knew if this was just the start, I was in for a wonderful meal.

My lunch choice was a sweet vadalia onion chicken wrap with bacon, lettuce and tomato. When I went into Lizzy’s I did not know about their prioritizing fresh veggies and meat, but after biting into my wrap I could tell it was different. It was wonderful. There was just enough dressing used to accent the other flavors without overpowering them.

I wrapped up this amazing visit with a fried cheesecake sundae. A cup of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup and covered with nuts. Wedged in the sides were two fried cheesecake pastries. I am a sucker for cheesecake of any kind and this dessert was perfect.

Lizzy’s Restaurant is not just a great place to eat, but it is a part of Greencastle-Antrim’s heritage. Having been in the area for over 30 years, Lizzy’s has remained when so many others have gone. Thanks in part to dedicated owners like Michael and Emily, who have not only honored the name of Lizzy’s but worked to grow it. Have you seen the Lizzy’s food truck around the region? Lizzy’s truly is a Franklin County treasure.

Lizzy’s Restaurant is located at 2753 Buchanan Trail W. and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Readers should be sure to ask about their catering for your next celebration. For menu and ordering options, they may visit their website: www.lizzysgreencastle.com.
