CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – State forest crews will remain on the scene of a mountain fire in Franklin County for several more days as the blaze continues to smolder, officials said Sunday.
The fire, which began Saturday afternoon in Greene Township bordering Chambersburg, prompted air support twice over the weekend to assist wildland firefighters working on rugged terrain. Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department officials said by Sunday afternoon that all local volunteer crews had cleared the area and that the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources had taken over command.
Fire officials said there is no risk to homes along Knob Hill Road or surrounding areas. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Smoke was visible for much of Saturday as two air tankers flew multiple drops to slow the fire’s spread. Crews returned early Sunday morning after the blaze crossed previously established fire lines. A helicopter assisted in the renewed firefighting efforts.
State Sen. Doug Mastriano posted a live video on Facebook on Sunday, April 12, showing smoke rising from South Mountain. In the video, he said the fire had been contained and thanked the volunteers and personnel involved in the firefight.
