COMMUTER ALERT: US 40 near Boonsboro

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has begun a project to improve intersection safety on US 40 at the entrance to Greenbrier State Park in the Boonsboro area of Washington County. Weather permitting, the project will continue through the end of September.

Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, to perform excavation and install a new raised median, signage and pavement markings. Barrels will be used to shift traffic in the work area to protect both workers and motorists.

The work is part of a $497,000 areawide project to improve intersection capacity, provide congestion relief and enhance safety at various locations in Washington County. MDOT SHA contractor C. William Hetzer, of Hagerstown, will perform the work.

Beginning October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland will require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
