BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT—A living history encampment will be at Monterey Pass Battlefield this weekend.
During the event, 124th New York Regiment (commonly known as the “Orange Blossoms”) provide impressions of the actual 124th NY Infantry Regiment which fought at Gettysburg.
The volunteer regiment from Orange County, New York, during the American Civil War was formed in Goshen during the summer of 1862 and officially mustered into U.S. Service on September 5, 1862, by Col. Augustus van Horne Ellis, the regiment was made up of volunteers from the surrounding towns and a core of veterans from the 71st New York State Militia.
The 124th has two monuments at Gettysburg; one near the site where Colonel Ellis fell, and one at the unit’s location during the defense of Cemetery Ridge.
A Civil War era reenactment unit based in southern New York, the 124th portrays the Union infantry volunteer of the Army of the Potomac as he appeared at mid-war.
Visitors can get a glimpse of infantry life during the Civil War—explore their camps, interact with the men, and witness as they demonstrate the tools, tactics, and firepower of that era.
The activity will include infantry drills, maneuvers and rifle demonstrations.
Camp setup will begin late afternoon on Friday, June 10; infantry drills will be held at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon.
The camp will be open to the public Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
