Chambersburg schools secure solar grants for clean energy

Several large solar arrays have appeared recently in Franklin and Fulton Counties

Two elementary schools in the Chambersburg Area School District have received substantial funding as part of Pennsylvania’s Solar for Schools Grant Program. Scotland Elementary and Fayetteville Elementary are among the schools statewide selected to receive a share of $22.6 million allocated for solar panel installations.

Scotland Elementary’s solar project was awarded $400,000, while Fayetteville Elementary’s project received $291,814. The funding will support the purchase and installation of solar panel systems, as well as related costs such as permit fees, energy storage, and utility interconnection.

The Solar for Schools Grant Program aims to help schools reduce energy expenses, lower carbon emissions, and create new job opportunities in the clean energy sector. State officials have emphasized that energy costs are among the largest expenditures for schools, and that investing in solar technology can help districts achieve long-term financial stability. Savings from reduced energy bills can be redirected to provide additional resources for teachers and students, while also supporting workforce development in renewable energy fields.

These new projects in Chambersburg reflect a broader commitment across Pennsylvania to modernize school infrastructure and promote sustainability. The grants are expected to not only benefit the schools financially but also enhance educational opportunities by integrating renewable energy concepts into the curriculum and offering students hands-on learning experiences related to clean energy technology.

With these awards, Chambersburg Area School District is taking a significant step toward a more sustainable future, ensuring both economic and educational benefits for students and the community.
