CareerTech students learn from local veterinarian

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Students in the veterinary assisting program at Franklin County Career and Technology Center gained hands-on insight into animal health care thanks to a recent visit from Dr. Deanna Becker, veterinarian and owner of North Paws Animal Hospital.

Before students headed into their spring break, instructor Lisa Cook invited Dr. Becker to demonstrate proper physical examination techniques for various types of animals. The session focused on the differences between assessing companion animals such as dogs and cats, pocket pets like rabbits and avian species including cockatiels.

CareerTech’s resident animals — from furry to feathered — all received thorough, stress-free checkups. Dr. Becker emphasized how proper handling helps reduce fear and overheating during exams, particularly for birds and smaller pets that are easily stressed. Students also learned that rabbits can be timid about showing their teeth, an important consideration for veterinary care.

The demonstration offered valuable real-world experience for students preparing for careers in veterinary medicine and animal care.
