Buttonwood Nature Center to launch spring speaker series

This Great Egret in breeding plumage was photographed by Linette Mansberger, who will present “Winging It Near Water,” the first program in Buttonwood’s annual spring speaker series, on Thursday, March 6 at the Church of the Apostles in Waynesboro.

WAYNESBORO – Buttonwood Nature Center launches its annual spring speaker series, “Feathers, Fur & Fins: Wildlife and Water Habitats” on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in the social room at Church of the Apostles. Admission is free.

The first program in the three-part series is “Winging It Near Water,” presented by Linette Mansberger, nature photographer and board member of South Mountain Audubon Society.

With a presentation of her own photographs, Mansberger will showcase birds that are found near various water habitats in south central Pennsylvania. She will teach about the families of birds that frequent wetlands, ponds and streams, as well as some of the birds’ unique characteristics.

Also included will be photos of a few remarkable birds from water environs around the world. Mansberger enjoys traveling worldwide to photograph nature.

Mansberger taught kindergarten for 33 years in the Spring Grove School District in York County, Pennsylvania. Now retired, she uses her images to create and present nature programs for various organizations throughout the state. She is an active member of the South Mountain Audubon Society.

The second lecture is on Thursday, March 13, when Chris Davis, park biologist at Gettysburg National Park, presents “The Beavers at Gettysburg National Park.” The final program, on March 20, is “Waterways of the Pennsylvania South-Central Region—Fishing, Boating and More,” presented by Sarah Bartle, waterways conservation officer, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

The speaker series is sponsored by Robert and Grace Brown, with additional support from Buttonwood’s Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation; APX Enclosures; Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson; and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle and Kim Larkin.
