WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Members of Buchanan Trail Quilters “wrapped” veterans and government services employees in love, gratitude, comfort and support at a ceremony Nov. 4 in Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waynesboro.
“Today, we pause to honor those whose service has shaped our nation – those who wore the uniform and those who carried the mantle of public duty,” was part of a litany said before handmade quilts in recognition of their service were presented to: Ellie Bauerle and Judy Stitely, U.S. Air Force; Karen Ridenour-Price, American Red Cross and Donut Dollie; Tara Logan, U.S. State Department; Dale Fewell, Peter Walters, Tammy Morgan, Robert Shugg and Donald W Mort, U.S. Army; Marie Norris and Kenneth Taylor, U.S. Navy; Nelson LeHardy and Gerald Gardner, U.S. Marines; and Cindy Melanson and Mark Melanson, U.S. Public Health Service.
“These custom-crafted quilts are more than fabric — they are tangible symbols of our appreciation,” according to a spokesman for the guild. “The quilts were created by many of the guild members who gave of their time, materials and talent to cut, sew, and assemble the quilts. The members feel a deep sense of pride and unity in honoring those who have served.”
Recipients offered details of their service and thanked guild members for the quilts. A reception was held in the fellowship hall of the church.
For recipients unable to attend, the quilts were either shipped or delivered to them in person by guild members.
The Quilters meet at 10 a.m. the third Tuesday of each month from September through June at the church, 43 S. Church St.
