BOONSBORO, Md. — The Town of Boonsboro is reminding motorists to stop for pedestrians crossing in marked crosswalks as the school year begins.
In a recent public safety message, the town urged drivers to watch for people crossing streets and to allow them to cross safely. The reminder specifically noted ongoing concerns at the intersection of North Main Street, Orchard Drive and the entrance to Shafer Park, where the town said some vehicles have not stopped for pedestrians.
Maryland law requires motorists to come to a complete stop when a pedestrian is crossing a roadway in a marked crosswalk and is either on the half of the roadway where the vehicle is traveling or approaching from an adjacent lane on the other half of the roadway.
The town also reminded drivers that it is unlawful to pass another vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian in either a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
Pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks and activate crosswalk lights by pushing the pedestrian signal button when one is available. The town asked pedestrians to remain cautious while crossing because drivers may fail to stop.
The reminder applies to crosswalks on Main Street and Potomac Street, according to the town.
Under Maryland Transportation Article Section 21-502, pedestrians have the right of way in marked crosswalks. The town urged motorists to slow down, watch for pedestrians and stop before crosswalks to help protect people walking through the community.
