Bono helps keep Smithsburg girls undefeated, other basketball meetups

BOONSBORO – Smithburg’s girls basketball team remained undefeated through 14 games as Claire Bono scored 28 points Friday to lead the Leopards over Boonsboro. 

Bono hit 12 of 16 shots – including all nine of her two-point tries – to fuel Smithsburg, which played its entire roster and had eight of its 10 players score. 

Bono added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

Skyla Mastronardi was the only other in double figures with 10 but added four assists and six steals. Jenna Todd had seven points while pulling down 10 rebounds and blocking five shots. She also had four assists. 

MORE GIRLS BASKETBALL

Frederick 58, South Hagerstown 37  

Aniyah Freeman bounced back from a tough outing against Williamsport earlier this week with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Rebels loss to the Cadets. She added four steals and two blocks. 

Khloe Terralonge backed Freeman with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals. Diamond Lloyd and Autumn Fields had three points each.  

Frederick’s Cayenne Pigeon and Marlee Williams led all scorers with 17 points each. 

BOYS BASKETBALL 

Tuscarora 75, North Hagerstown 50 

Tuscarora outscored the Hubs 12-3 from 3-point range to send North to its second straight loss. North never led in the game and trailed by as much as 28 points. 

The Titans outscored the Hubs 36-9 from long range, which was more than the margin of victory. Tuscarora shot 45% for the game, including 55% of its two-point shots. 

Brayden Cespedes led North with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Michael Bell added 11. 

North is now 1-2 since Jan. 8 when it lost second-leading scorer Joey Dorsey with a broken foot. 

Frederick 75, South 63 

Luke Leisinger had 14 points and DJ Wade added 11 points with 14 rebounds, but the Rebels couldn’t keep pace with the Cadets. 

Nygil Jefferies had 14 points for South and Avery Cosley 13 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Leisinger also had five rebounds and three assists.
