Seven students at Waynesboro Area Senior High School have been awarded scholarships by Waynesboro College Club. The winners were announced at the club’s 89th banquet May 15 in Waynesboro Country Club. One objective of the club is to encourage interest in obtaining a college education among high school students. This year, the club awarded $25,000 to the recipients, the most money ever awarded in a year. The three students who were awarded $5,000 scholarships are: Gracie French will attend Juniata College to major in environmental science or animal sciences. Staff and students at Mowrey Elementary School in Quincy got their first glimpse of the library makeover May 14. The ”reveal” showcased the $40,000 worth of furniture the school received for the winning entry of media specialist Jennifer Smith and instructional technology specialist Keith McCray in the second annual education learning space design competition sponsored by KI (kay eye), an employee-owned furniture manufacturer in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The design, developed using a free classroom planner tool provided by KI, received more than 12,000 online votes. Waynesboro Studio Art Club welcomed guests to its 70th annual Clothesline Art Exhibit May 3 through 5 at Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) in Waynesboro. Co-chairs of the show were Jean Frey and Janette Koons. Exhibit categories included historical, landscape (oil, watercolor, acrylic or gouache on paper), floral, still life, pastel, portraits, animal portraits, drawings or transparent graphics, genre, abstract and pottery; and student categories – realism and abstract. A Waynesboro teen has created a meditation garden at her church for her Eagle Scout project. “It will give people a place to sit quietly to pray and meditate,” offered Olivia McDonald, daughter of Sean and Becky McDonald. Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro, also will use the gated, grassy space off the church parking lot for outdoor church services, youth ministry and Sunday School lessons, she added. “In addition, it will be welcoming to neighbors who wish to use it,” she added. There will be more than 500 items available at the event, set for Saturday, April 20, at Green Grove Gardens, 1032 Buchanan Trail East, Greencastle.
