Aldi Construction to begin soon at Wayne Heights Mall

Keep your eyes posted on the Wayne Heights Mall for signs that construction on the new Aldi store is set to begin.

“We’re planning to start Monday, Sept. 18, and our work will probably wrap up in February,” said Kyle Stevens, construction manager for Buckeye Construction North Ridgeville, Ohio. “We began a while ago, and put in the building pad. We’re not doing the whole project, just the shell. When we’re done, it will be a big empty box, and then Aldi’s will come in and do their buildout,” he added.

Washington Township received payments for the impact fees and permits and released land use permits for the project, according to Chad Reichard, assistant zoning officer and planner for Washington Township. Once the building permit is issued, which Stevens said he hoped would happen Thursday, construction can begin.

The process also included the recording of the land development plan … the footprint of the store and construction sequence, Reichard added.

“We’re thankful to see this project coming to Washington Township. It brings a much needed economic development to the Wayne Heights Mall,” he noted.

The 20,499 square foot grocery store will be located between Rite Aid and Dollar Tree, where stores were demolished to make way for the project. The plans were first presented to the Washington Township Planning Committee in March.

The guiding principle of Aldi for the last 40 years is “great quality should come with everyday low prices,” according to its website.

In 1961, the Albrecht Family founded the world’s first discount grocery store in Germany. In 1976, the first ALDI store was opened in Iowa. Today, with ALDI headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, there are more than 2,000 stores across 36 states with over 25,000 employees.

Everyday items are displayed in their original shipping boxes to save on restocking shelves. And on Wednesdays customers find new food items, small kitchen appliances, seasonal decor, outdoor furniture and  gardening tools, etc.
