WAYNESBORO – One of the highlights of the autumn season is the delightful scents of a fall candle. Pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon and apple are just a few of the delightful aromas one could find at The Vintage Flame on Main Street in downtown Waynesboro.
This past Tuesday, Sept 30, the Vintage Flame owners, Shauna and Tim Snidow, welcomed guests of all ages to their shop to create fall candles, wax melts and diffusers that could be used as air fresheners.
The event was sold out with about 20 guests gathered in the “wax lab” where Shauna, a former science teacher, explained the tools the class would be working with and instructions on how to create a seasonal candle. The group had colored jars to choose from: green, orange and purple. I chose purple. There were also baskets full of fall and Halloween decals to put on the jars.
The wax used was a blend of coconut and apricot wax making it toxic free and vegan. Tim was assisting with the event and showed us how to properly pour and stir the wax mixtures to be sure we were safe from splashing and burns.
There was a wall of bottles that had every type of scent a person can imagine. There were fruits, flowers and various foods. You could mix and match scents to create your very own blend of aromatic uniqueness that would surely be the envy of all your friends. I chose the pumpkin pecan waffles, while my table mates chose apple cinnamon, vanilla and even chocolate cake.
Next we did a similar mixture to create wax melts that can be user with burners and a small handmade glass diffuser bottle that can be used as an air freshener in one’s vehicle.
It was a wonderful learning experience, and Shauna and Tim were great hosts, but the highlight of the evening was the great people at the event. Many were returners who frequented past events at the Vintage Flame, and they shared many stories from past crafting adventures. One local lady there with her daughter kept me entertained with the adventures of her new cat, Rancho.
The Vintage Flame has been a store on Main Street for the last two years and is very involved in the local community. In addition to their candle workshops, they also work with various charities such as the Antietam Humane Society and the Waynesboro New Hope Shelter. But it is the welcoming personalities of the shop owners that really make this store special.
“We have a lot of the local kids come in after school or sports practice and just hang out,” Shauna said. “They are curious and want to learn, and we are always happy to teach and give them a positive outlet.”
The Vintage Flame is located at 26 W. Main Street.
