GETTYSBURG – Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black, a Carnegie Mellon professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will present a free book talk and signing at the Gettysburg National Military Park’s Museum & Visitor Center on Friday, Sept. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The event, hosted in partnership with the Gettysburg Foundation, will take place in the Kinsley Theater, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets are required.
Fields-Black will discuss her book, “COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War,” which explores Harriet Tubman’s lesser-known role as a spy for the U.S. Army during the Civil War. A descendant of a soldier involved in the Combahee River Raid, Fields-Black will highlight Tubman’s leadership in commanding spies and pilots, using intelligence from freedom seekers to liberate enslaved people from South Carolina rice plantations. The talk will also spotlight the resilience of those freed and the enduring legacy of Tubman’s heroism.
Following the presentation, attendees can meet Fields-Black and purchase signed copies of her book.
