Mr. Bruce D. Hillyer, 85, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2025 in Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C.
Born February 8, 1940 in Lincoln, NE, he was the son of the late Roland A. and Vivian (Powers) Hillyer.
Mr. Hillyer was a graduate of Omak High School with the Class of 1959 and later attended the University of Washington.
He served his country honorably in the United States Army where he served two tours in Vietnam and later Germany and was also stationed in Tawain and Okinawa during his service. He retired in 1981 after 21 years of faithful service.
Following his military career, he was employed in software development by the United States Treasury and the United States Department of Justice until his retirement in 2010.
Mr. Hillyer had a passion for science fiction, especially Star Wars and Star Trek along with a deep appreciation for space. He also enjoyed reading, woodworking, photography and working on his car.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rita F. (Stottlemyer) Hillyer, whom he married on June 24, 1972; three brothers; one sister; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 27, 2025 in Germantown Church of God, 16924 Raven Rock Road, Cascade, MD with Pastor Linda Rosenberry officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery where military graveside honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg, PA.
